I finally had a chance to play Maplewood Golf Course in Renton recently. I hadn’t played this course in years, and now I remember why. The clubhouse was nice, same with the restaurant, but the course left a little something to be desired.
According to their website, the Maplewood Golf Course was voted “Best Public Golf Course” four years in a row from the “Reader’s Choice Award” of the South County Journal. I’m not sure how anyone could seriously come to that conclusion. This course is about as short as it gets for “Regular” courses in King County. The white tees are playing about 5698 yards, and the blues are playing about 6112, which is comparable to the white tees on most golf courses in the area. If you do get stuck playing the white tees as I did you might as well just bring your driver, sand wedge, and putter. Unfortunately I got stuck with a group of guys who refused to play from blues, and about 1/4 of the par four’s were drivable. In regards to condition, the course was fair, and the greens were probably my favorite part of this course. They were fairly smooth, and very firm which I thought was great. The scenery was pleasant, there’s a river nearby, plenty of trees and tons of bicyclists racing down the path.
Overall I give this course a 2 on a scale of 1-4, with 4 being the best. Just be sure to play from the blue tees! I do believe you should try every course at least once, so if you are looking to play Maplewood GC, here is a link to the course website – http://rentonwa.gov/living/default.aspx?id=1370
